Torre San Gregorio<\/strong> deve il suo nome al fatto che qui anticamente sorgeva una delle tante torri di guardia che sono un tratto cos\u00ec caratteristico della costiera salentina e della Puglia in generale.<\/p>\n

\n

Le torri costiere<\/strong><\/a> nascono da un esigenza moto sentita dalle popolazioni soprattutto residenti sulla costa: questi solitari edifici avevano il compito di avvistare e di opporre una prima linea difensiva contro i nemici provenienti dal mare. Se le torri e le fortificazioni sulla costa rappresentavano gi\u00e0 un’efficace strumento di protezione in epoca romana, lo sviluppo e la costruzione di una rete di fortificazioni vera e propria, in cui le torri erano poste in maniera da poter comunicare l’una con l’altra in caso di pericolo, sar\u00e0 un immane investimento difensivo cominciato nel basso medioevo e continuato fino al 1600.<\/p>\n

\"felloniche2\"Il fenomeno delle incursioni via mare \u00e8 stato un vero e proprio flagello per molte regioni del Sud Italia per tutto il medioevo. Dal mare le navi di pirati e generalmente dei saraceni raggiungevano le coste italiane. Una volta sbarcati a terra pirati o eserciti assalitori che fossero si abbandonavano a razzie di animali e di persone da ridurre in schiavit\u00f9, assediavano ed invadevano citt\u00e0 e paesi da cui gli abitanti erano costretti a fuggire in massa, distruggevano i luoghi di culto e gli edifici sacri.
\nL’episodio forse pi\u00f9 drammatico \u00e8 la presa di Otranto<\/strong><\/a>, i cui abitanti pagarono lo scotto di un eccidio di circa 800 persone per mano dei turchi.<\/p>\n

Tale fenomeno sar\u00e0 una costante fino almeno alla battaglia di Lepanto del 1571 che porr\u00e0 fine per un certo periodo di tempo alle incursioni, sebbene esse continueranno poi in tono minore fino al ‘700.
\nLe torri costiere svettano in generale ben alte sulla costa, in modo da dominare un ampio tratto di mare, e sono generalmente provviste di merli, colatoi per l’olio bollente e feritoie, in modo da garantire alla guarnigione che le difende la possibilit\u00e0 di resistere.<\/p>\n

\n

In tutta l’area salentina si possono ancora oggi ammirare molteplici esempi di torri costiere, alcune in pessimo stato conservativo altre invece recuperate e ristrutturate. Molte di esse hanno lasciato il loro nome ai territori circostanti, come Torre Pali<\/strong>, Torre S. Emiliano<\/strong>, Torre Vado<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
