Vereto<\/strong>, il cui nome antico sembra essere Hyretum, sar\u00e0 una delle prime vere e proprie citt\u00e0 che la civilt\u00e0 messapica costruir\u00e0 nel Basso Salento, cos\u00ec come viene tramandato dagli storici greci del V secolo Avanti Cristo.<\/p>\n

\n

La civilt\u00e0 messapica<\/strong> era costituita da una serie di trib\u00f9 tra di loro indipendenti, ognuna riunita intorno ad un centro urbano, circondato da alte e possenti mura con le quali si difendeva dagli attacchi delle trib\u00f9 vicine. Al centro del villaggio messapico s trovava l’acropoli dove si ergevano i templi dedicati alle divinit\u00e0 e, come per i greci un grande spazio centrale., l’agor\u00e0, dove si riuniva la popolazione durante gli eventi politici sociali e religiosi.<\/p>\n

\"leuca1\"Il territorio di ogni citt\u00e0 non era solo costituito dalla citt\u00e0 ma anche dal territorio circostante dove i messapi svolgevano le attivit\u00e0 agricole e pastorali. Le citt\u00e0 insediate vicino al mare comprendevano nel territorio anche la costa, dove venivano costruite le infrastrutture necessarie per le attivit\u00e0 commerciali e portuali delle citt\u00e0. Torre San Gregorio, con le antiche strutture portuali che giacciono sul fondale davanti alla baia, l’antico pozzo di rifornimento di acqua dolce ed uno scalone di pietre monolitiche che scende nella baia rappresenta ci\u00f2 che resta dell’antico porto di Vereto.<\/p>\n

Vereto entrer\u00e0 a far parte della dodecapoli messapica, una confederazione delle pi\u00f9 potenti citt\u00e0 messapiche costituitasi non solo per contrastare meglio le minacce dei nemici, in particolare della potente Taranto, ma anche epr ribadire ed affermare comuni tratti culturali, sociali e religiosi, pur mantenendo l’autonomia politica in ogni centro.<\/p>\n

I centri messapici erano sparsi in tutto il Basso Salento: Neriton (Nard\u00f2), Alytia (Alezio), Aoxentum (Ugento), Mesania (Mesagne), Brentesion (Brindisi), Hyretum (Vereto), Idruntum (Otranto), Sybar (Cavallino), Ka\u00eclia (Ceglie Messapica), Manduria, Orra (Oria), Thuria Sallentina (Roca), e la lega in cui si riuniranno permetter\u00e0 per lungo tempo loro di resistere alle spinte egemoniche di Taranto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Non riusciranno tuttavia, con altrettanta fortuna a tenere a bada le spinte espansive dei romani, che una vola conquistata Taranto si espanderanno nella regione salentina. Sebbene diventati sudditi dell’impero romano i messapi non accetteranno mai di buon grado la dominazione, pur non essendo pi\u00f9 in grado di ribellarsi ad essi.<\/p>\n

Vereto continuer\u00e0 la sua fortuna come citt\u00e0 commerciale e portuale, anche sotto i romani, e scomparir\u00e0 definitivamente intorno al IX secolo distrutta da un terribile flagello delle terre salentine, i saraceni.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
