{"id":112,"date":"2009-08-10T20:19:14","date_gmt":"2009-08-10T18:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sangregorio.net\/?p=112"},"modified":"2009-08-10T20:24:09","modified_gmt":"2009-08-10T18:24:09","slug":"storia-di-torre-san-gregorio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sangregorio.net\/index.php\/storia-di-torre-san-gregorio.html","title":{"rendered":"Storia di Torre San Gregorio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Torre San Gregorio<\/strong>, quello che oggi \u00e8 un piccolo insediamento residenziale vivace ed abitato soprattutto nel periodo estivo dai tanti villeggianti e turisti che scelgono il Salento come meta delle proprie vacanze, ha in realt\u00e0 una storia molto antica.<\/p>\n<p>Qui infatti, a poca distanza, sorgeva una delle citt\u00e0 pi\u00f9 importanti gi\u00e0 da epoche remote, ancora prima che i romani diventassero i dominatori incontrastati del Salento e del resto della Puglia: <strong>Vereto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sangregorio.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/sangregorio5-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"sangregorio5\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sangregorio.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/sangregorio5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sangregorio.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/sangregorio5.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A Torre San Gregorio era probabilmente localizzato il vecchio scalo portuale della citt\u00e0 messapica, come ancora oggi sono testimonianza i numerosi reperti archeologici rimasti in loco. Tra questi una possente scalinata realizzata con grandi blocchi di pietra che scende fino al mare, un antico pozzo che serviva a rifornire di acqua fresca le navi, e, ad una profondit\u00e0 di 7 metri sul fondo del mare, i resti delle antiche banchine portuali.<\/p>\n<p>La citt\u00e0 di Vereto era una delle pi\u00f9 fiorenti dell&#8217;area messapica, una popolazione insediatasi in Salento probabilmente probabilmente costituita di popolazioni che erano giunte qui dai Balcani.<br \/>\nE Vereto rappresenter\u00e0 ancora, per tutta l&#8217;era romana, un&#8217;importante calo commerciale e portuale.<\/p>\n<p>Nel IX secolo, a causa di incursioni particolarmente disastrose dei pirati, la citt\u00e0 di Vereto scompare completamente, ed i suoi abitanti si spargono nelle campagne dell&#8217;entroterra pi\u00f9 sicure dagli attacchi provenienti dal mare.<\/p>\n<p>Per molti secoli il destino dell&#8217;area di Torre San Gregorio sar\u00e0 comune con quello di altre localit\u00e0 costiere. Tale e tanto \u00e8 il pericolo dei saraceni e delle razzie dei pirati che le citt\u00e0 costiere si svuotano e scompaiono. Ma la vocazione portuale del piccolo porticciolo non smetter\u00e0 di avere la sua importanza, rappresentando non pi\u00f9 una meta privilegiata dei traffici con l&#8217;oriente che passer\u00e0 ad Otranto, quanto piuttosto un punto di attracco e di appoggio per le navi che percorrevano quella rotta.<\/p>\n<p>Del 1600 e del 1700 sono alcuni documenti e ritrovamenti che testimoniano della presenza di attivit\u00e0 portuali nella baia di Torre San Gregorio, in particolare alcuni graffiti ritrovati nella <strong>Grotta dei Tarantini<\/strong> che oltre ad una data, 1768, riportano disegni di imbarcazioni a vela.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Torre San Gregorio, quello che oggi \u00e8 un piccolo insediamento residenziale vivace ed abitato soprattutto nel periodo estivo dai tanti villeggianti e turisti che scelgono il Salento come meta delle proprie vacanze, ha in realt\u00e0 una storia molto antica.
